Shadow Play in Mexico
My first shoot with Pivot Pixie happened shortly after Nina and I moved to Playa del Carmen, Mexico during COVID. At the time, we were living in a small loft apartment, and I was still figuring out what Room Noir was going to look like now that we were living outside of the United States.
I met Pivot Pixie, also known as Shawnie, through Nina. She had met her at one of the Black women meetups she was attending in Playa del Carmen, and her and Shawnie clicked. Nina asked her if she was a model and if she would be interested in coming over for a photo session. Luckily she was both a model, and interested, and was down to come over and see what we could capture.
What started as a casual meeting turned into one of the shoots that had the biggest influence on the direction I would eventually take with Room Noir.
Meeting Pivot Pixie in Mexico
Pivot Pixie is a model, social media influencer, traveler, and lifestyle creator known for sharing her experiences with travel, fashion, Mexico, and life abroad. She has built a strong following around her perspective as a Black woman traveling and living internationally, particularly through her connection to Mexico.
Mexico has become a major part of her life. She travels there frequently and has since obtained dual citizenship, making her relationship with the country much more than a typical travel destination.
That was something Nina and I could relate to while we were living in Playa del Carmen.
There was also an Atlanta connection that we didn’t know about when we first met. Pivot Pixie was based in Atlanta, just like Nina and me. Then we discovered that one of Nina’s mentors and close friends was also a close friend and former roommate of Shawnie’s.
That was one of those moments where everybody suddenly realizes how small the world really is.
We connected almost immediately and became friends. That friendship has continued over the years, and we still photograph Pivot Pixie whenever we have the opportunity.
The First Pivot Pixie Nude Shoot
For this first session, Nina did Shawnie’s makeup and we photographed her inside our loft apartment.
The space wasn’t large, and I didn’t have access to the kind of studio setup I had become accustomed to working with in Atlanta. Instead of fighting the limitations of the apartment, I decided to work with them.
I kept the lighting simple and started paying more attention to the areas of the room where the light fell off into darkness.
That ended up becoming the defining characteristic of the shoot.
The session was a full nude photography setup, and the darkness gave me a way to photograph Shawnie that felt very different from a typical nude model session. I could control what the viewer saw and what disappeared into the shadows without needing a complicated lighting setup.
A small amount of light could completely change the photograph.
Sometimes her face would be the focus. Other images were more about the shape of her body and the way the light moved across her skin. In some photographs, large parts of the frame disappear into darkness.
That became the idea behind Pivot Pixie Shadow Play.
How Pivot Pixie Changed the Direction of Room Noir
This shoot stands out to me because it was one of the first times I really understood what Room Noir could become.
At that point, I knew I wanted to create something around nude photography, but I was still figuring out how I wanted to approach it. Working with Pivot Pixie in that apartment showed me that I didn’t need a traditional studio or a lot of equipment to create photographs that felt intentional and artistic.
The limitations actually forced me to experiment more.
I started thinking more about shadows, negative space, composition, and how much information I actually needed to show in a photograph. Instead of trying to make everything visible, I became more comfortable letting the darkness do some of the work.
That approach has stayed with me ever since.
When I look back at the early Room Noir shoots, this is one of the sessions where I can see the transition happening. I was beginning to move away from simply photographing a beautiful model and toward creating images with a stronger visual point of view.
Pivot Pixie happened to be the person in front of the camera when that started to click for me.
Pivot Pixie, Travel and Life Abroad
Part of what makes photographing Pivot Pixie interesting is that she has always had a life that extends beyond modeling.
Travel is a major part of her identity and her social media presence. Her content covers fashion, lifestyle, international travel, and her experiences living outside the United States. Her relationship with Mexico has become an important part of that story, and she continues to share that experience with the audience she has built online.
She has also appeared in online reality and dating content, including Pop the Balloon, which has introduced her to audiences who may know her from a completely different side of her career.
For people who discover Pivot Pixie through her travel content, social media, or reality appearances, this photography collection shows another side of her.
These photographs were made before the audience and online presence she has today had fully developed. They document a particular period when she was traveling through Mexico, building relationships in Playa del Carmen, and exploring different creative opportunities.
That’s one of the reasons I like having these older shoots in the Room Noir archive.
They preserve moments that can’t be recreated later.
Contemporary Fine Art Nude Photography
Although this is a full nude photography session, the purpose of the project was always artistic.
Room Noir has always been interested in the space between portrait photography, editorial photography, and contemporary fine art. Nude photography is part of that because the nude body gives us another way to work with composition, light, movement, and expression.
The Pivot Pixie photographs were created with very little production. There was a small apartment, simple lighting, makeup, and the camera.
That simplicity allowed me to concentrate on the things that mattered most to me as a photographer: light, shadows, composition, and the person I was photographing.
The darkness in the apartment became an important part of the photographs rather than something I needed to correct.
That experience influenced a lot of the photography that came afterward.
