Working with Traveling Models Like Ayeonna: Lessons from Nashville

While organizing some of my archived sessions this week, I stumbled across a set of photos that brought back memories—specifically a shoot with the incredible traveling model, Ayeonna, back in 2022. We were visiting family in Nashville around the holidays, just before what was supposed to be a short trip to Mexico (which ended up becoming a 6-month stay in Playa Del Carmen, but that’s a story for another blog).

I remember being in that “in-between” mindset—half on vacation, half trying to stay creative. So Nina and I decided to reach out to a few models to see if we could line up a shoot while we were in town. That’s how we linked with Ayeonna.

Let me tell you—working with traveling models is a unique experience. They’re usually pros at moving quickly, adapting to new environments, and bringing serious energy to the shoot. Ayeonna was no exception. She showed up ready, styled, and fully tapped in. We shot at the Moxy Hotel in downtown Nashville—a trendy spot, but the room we used was tight. Think barely-room-for-lights tight. Still, we made it work.

Honestly, I look back at those images and think, “I could’ve done better with the space.” But sometimes, the point isn’t perfection—it’s creating something meaningful despite the limitations. And working with someone as seasoned as Ayeonna helped make that happen.

What I Learned About Working with Traveling Models:

1. Flexibility is everything.
Traveling models are often on tight schedules and may be squeezing in your shoot between bookings. Stay flexible and organized.

2. Small spaces can still create big impact.
Our shoot location wasn’t ideal, but we got beautiful, artistic shots anyway. Don’t underestimate what you can create with what you’ve got.

3. Communication before the shoot is key.
Because you may only meet them once, clear communication ahead of time ensures you’re both aligned on the vision and expectations.

4. Professionalism matters.
Working with someone like Ayeonna reminds you how valuable a strong work ethic is—she brought ideas, energy, and presence from the jump.

5. Capture the moment—don’t overthink it.
You may not have time for elaborate lighting setups or dozens of outfit changes. Embrace the moment and capture the energy.

Whether you’re shooting in a cramped hotel room or a full studio setup, working with traveling models can open you up to new styles, rhythms, and experiences. It forces you to be resourceful and reminds you why you fell in love with photography in the first place.

If you ever get the chance to work with someone like Ayeonna, take it. You’ll grow, adapt, and probably create something that sticks with you long after the shoot is done.
